Senior Design Team sdmay19-04 • Open-Source Prototyping of 5G Wireless Systems for Smart Ag

As a next milestone in wireless communication, 5G wireless networks are expected to enable not only Gbps mobileconnectivity but also machine-type communications for smart ag, connected autonomous vehicles, smart grid,Industry 4.0, and AR/VR. Besides advanced communication technologies such as ultra-reliable, low-latencycommunication, 5G wireless networks represent the convergence of computing and networking in many aspects ofthe telecommunication industry, and they embrace opportunities such as software-based open-source innovationand infrastructure virtualization. 5G wireless is projected to reach a market size of $250 billion by 2025, and it hasbeen attracting significant investment from industry and government worldwide.

Through this project, students will learn, develop, and prototype advanced 5G wireless solutions and apply thosesolutions to domains such as smart ag, autonomous vehicles, or AR/VR. As a part of the project, students will get to“play” with state-of-the-art platform technologies such as the open-source 5G wireless implementation platformOpenAirInterface (http://www.openairinterface.org/), USRP software-defined radios (https://www.ettus.com/),connected and autonomous vehicle platform OpenXC (https://developer.ford.com/pages/openxc), and integratedopen-source computing and networking platform Mosaic5G (http://mosaic-5g.io/).
